There’s much talk lately about regulating social media corporations – for and against these companies having freedom to censor users or protecting individual access to platforms as ubiquitous as a public utility. Should social media be regulated?
Human beings aren’t computers. We calculate slowly. Our memories are fallible. Our brains struggle to work with anything over a few variables at the same time without having to use external aids (pieces of paper, calculator, spreadsheet etc). Does this mean we’re living on borrowed time, like the mainstream mass media would have us believe?
Big capital ‘survival of the fittest’ mentality weeds out the exceptional upwardly mobile from the proletariat and what better demonstration of this cynical Darwinian principle than millions of freeborn turkeys voting for Christmas. Who’s to say it isn’t “right” for a country if that’s the outcome? Brexit’s EXIT DAY will mark the final scene of this Act in the Dramatis Britannia one way or another. Parliamentary majority will define what comes after. It won’t be pretty if the wrecking ball is given unregulated, unlimited power to swing.
I’ve often heard Howl and The Wasteland paired before, in the smokeless midnight air of alt-coffee urban popups, listening for free as a mumbling hipster reads them aloud, back-to-back, in the same reverent cadence and double bass rhythm and nobody listening to the words…
On 12th December 2019 the United Kingdom goes to the polls in the most divisive, fucked up election in living memory. Whether the voters know it or not, the stakes are enormous. Similarly high stakes play out in the United States in November 2020.
Will the UK (and the USA, in 2020) have woken up to the existential threats to their long-term future or has big capital already conditioned the people of these great nations into turkeys voting for Christmas?
As human beings we know that FREE WILL matters. It’s one of our most prized possessions. It’s the basis of our concepts of freedom and individuality and self-identity. But what is FREE WILL if we are conditioned to only make choices that suit conventional agenda? What use is FREE WILL unless it’s exercising FREE CHOICE out of the whole TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH?
I don’t like it when English is used badly (or lazily) in ways that – for whatever reason – get accepted into normal everyday usage. It’s good when language grows but too often it’s a case of importing one word, at the price of losing others.
